Phase 5.1: Proposal

I have two ideas for residents: single 30 year old or people starting families.

For the 30 year old group I think they would be people who are still apart of the nightlife scene since the site is close to North Broadway and Argyle. The programs I’m thinking of are art studios, yoga studios, fitness area and gardens. I have an idea of 30 year olds who want to have fun and continue to grow and learn. Uptown has a majority of 30 year olds moving to the area so I think it would be a good place for people to meet.

For the people starting families group, there are not a lot of families currently in Uptown. Though there are a lot of schools and parks nearby it has become more of a singles community. However, I think it would be important for more families to come up to the neighborhood and create a place for them live.  My site in Uptown would be a good place since it’s in close proximity to school, nearby restaurants and parks. The programs I’m thinking of are a play area for kids, art studio, and gardens. I think it would be important to have a space for all types of families, and to have an area that allows for families to learn and grow. I want for the space to grow with the family and be a long term place to live.

I’ve also been thinking of ways these groups could live together in the same space. Having a variety of groups would create a greater sense of community. Allowing room for families to start and grow could cater to this age demographic and the amenities provided would be attractive not only to single residents but also family groups.

Examples

The above examples show ways of sharing that I am interested in using in my project. I intend to create a space that pulls people together and give them opportunities to interact with each other. Whether that is through seeing each other, talking, meeting or gathering.

I’m intrigued by the uncertainty between your two possible resident groups. I think you could go either way (or possibly even both) and am hoping we can use some of the time on Friday comparing the two populations in terms of how each might share space. For the 11x17s please include the demographic information from Monday you think relevant. For the 30 year-old singles the idea of some form of co-living but more “grown-up” than the 20-something hostel and for the families your idea that they could make it a long-term home even as their space needs will change over time (kids grow up, more kids arrive, kids leave home…). Also that some of the desirable but not required space families look for in a house could be shared in your building: art studio, garden, kids play area. Both fascinating.

I like your graphic examples, especially relevant to me is the ones of different scales of groups (the circles and blobs) functioning as a larger group (blob) or individual groups (circles): right now your non-residential program seems to function in a similar way at different scales: extended space for a single family, or for multiple families, or even a larger group including non-residents like a yoga class.
Perhaps a good way to further investigate your residents would be to try to draw diagrams like this for both the singles and the families: what would be the fundamentally private unshared spaces/functions and what would be the spaces and functions that could be shared. It might end up being a cross between the circles/blobs and the section diagrams you posted (I’m fine if it’s not yet an actual section, just a conceptual idea about space).

For the precedents it would be easier to assess if they were individual images in the blog post and had text or a caption specific to each one (although that might not have been possible until I upped our storage). Looking at the images there’s much to draw from: for Friday pick a few of your favorites and try to draw your own diagram of it or derived from it using (abstractly) your spaces/programs. For example, the first image and diagram from the LOHA project could apply directly to your project: buffering more private spaces from the shared circulation, while also creating a central “open” zone. Could you elaborate on it thinking about your share programs? Like including shared play space, or the studio(s), also other layers of sharing?
