Phase 5.1: Proposal

I want the population my project will serve to be single people or couples in their early 20s to late 30s. My idea for the two shared spaces was to have a small performance space for local bands and singers, this will bring in the performers from the area and bring in people around the area since it’s cheaper than big shows, it will also help support local music artists. The other shared space would be an art studio/gallery which would support local artists, offer classes for locals of all ages which would promote arts and crafts, there would be a greater sense of community involvement, and there could be art shows and art always on display not only for the residents but also for the public to support local businesses.

Uptown is big in nightlife, but also has the potential to have a good art scene. The performance space would promote local bands at nighttime, while the art studio would promote local artists during a more daytime setting. Mostly young adults live in this area which are more prone to partake in these kinds of venues.

Design Idea: My initial design idea is to have a entrance way that opens up into a small performance space with circulation pathways going around the 4 sides for the first few floors, this showcases the performance space and also further adds that element of shared space since it can be viewed and heard from multiple levels. Then there would be x number of level with the units in the center and keeping consistent with the circulation pathways of the first few floors, then the top floor would be a art studio/gallery which is accessible to the residents and the public.

Design Idea Diagrams:

Phase 1: Barcelona Pavilion Diagram: This has an interesting concept of shared space by having the main living programmatic spaces in the center with more circulation based spaces around the outside. I think this could be inspiration for my shared living space because it’s a similar concept to what’s used in some multi-living spaces.

Phase 1: MTCC Computer Lab Diagram: This diagram illustrates the personal spaces being pushed in terms of people on higher levels being able to see down at people in the lwoer levels which could be inspiration for my design of having a central space where people can circulate around but can also watch down below without being there for explicitly viewing purposes. This would push the boundaries of personal space, but in an accepted and comfortable way.

Phase 1: Crown Hall: This is similar to the idea behind the Barcelona Pavilion of having the main usage points in the center with pathways circulating around. This is also interesting in the way it minimally isolates the more private spaces in a way that people walking around can watch and listen in. I have a similar idea in terms of having pathways circulating around a central performance area – the people can watch and listen while getting from one point to another without having to be intently watching in the audience.

Phase 2: Marco Polo Tower: The biding  of the terraces allowing people from the respective floor units to go around from one unit’s terrace to another’s is somewhat similar to my idea of having circulation around the outside and could be beneficial in detailing my idea.

Phase 2: VIA 57: The way this structure incorporates the program is very interesting and beneficial for a shared living space. It provides living units with viewpoints into a central courtyard that is isolated from the outside but can be viewed from the residents. It used this notion of having circulation and the main program around the outside with a more shared space in the center.

Phase 2 pictures:

Phase 3: Model 1: My concept behind this model was to play with the acoustics in regard to how people circulate around the space, which could play into my design as well since i want to have a performance space in my building.

Phase 3: Model 2: My concept behind this model was to isolate two separate parts – the outside and the inside of the object – in a way that provides some sort of seclusion but can also be seen from both sides. This can help with my idea of having a central point and an outer circulation point because there would be a sense of separation but they’re also connected by viewpoints.

Phase 3: Model 3: This model provides many different viewpoints explicitly from the circulation patterns within the space. My idea was to have circulation going around a central point where as someone is walking around they can also view what’s going on around and beneath them.

Phase 3 Pictures:

Precedent Diagram 1: I think the language of this diagram could be really helpful in showing my concept. Separating the different programs and circulation patterns in a way that shows how they interact with one another but also how they’re broken up into their own sections nicely illustrate the idea and cohesion within the whole building. It’s also similar to the idea I have about having the first few floors open in the center for a performance space while having circulation around them to provide access to units and emphasizing the use of shared space within the building.

Precedent Diagram 2: I really like the language and overall graphics of this diagram. It does a good job of illustrating the various units within the building and showing the different types of shared spaces and how they interact with one another. It’s very clear how the building Is broken up into shared spaces and units and it’s represented in a good way.

Precedent Diagram 3: This diagram is a bit more sketchy and conceptual, but I like the way it emphasizes the circulation patterns to the various units because circulation will play a huge part in my representation of shared spaces. It emphasizes that in order to get to certain programmatic elements someone needs to take these various circulation paths, and I want my design to have circulation paths which not only get someone from point A to point B but also provide an experience in terms of enjoying the shared space.

  1. Emily,
There’s something fascinating about your interest in the Miesian space, particularly of the Barcelona pavilion, and the language of the balconies at Marco Polo. I’d like to see you revisit your gradient diagram of the Barcelona pavilion showing the whole floor plan and adding one that tries to create a bubble diagram of the spaces created or implied by the floating walls. For Friday?
Marco Polo’s balconies could help add to your 4th diagram: what if the “circulation” space at the perimeter was more than just circulation space? (See final paragraph)
I also like the 3rd of your pencil diagrams (the section). I’d like to see you try a version that draws on Via 57 to add more light and possibly views to the residences with the courtyard. Also for added precedent research please go to the Diller Scofidio Renfro website and look for projects that might be interesting and relevant. I’m thinking of:
Eyebeam competition proposal (and to a lesser degree the McMurtry building at Stanford)
ICA Boston stepped seating “theater” and another one which is a true theater/auditorium but with a glass wall at the back side.
There are likely others relating to both your program and your ideas of circulation between/around program, especially arts program.
I have to admit to being caught unprepared for the performance/theater venue, but like the local angle and the challenge to add a venue to Uptown. It makes sense given your targeted residents to provide amenities appealing to them, but one question to ponder is if your two programs are too similar- both in terms of the audience and the artistic angle. That might not be the case, just something to consider.
I’m not sure if you’re ready to deploy it now, but like the technique of your last diagram with the circulation and all of the small shared spaces off of it. I’m not sure how to reconcile it with the larger spaces you’re considering (theater and gallery) but maybe also something to get you thinking about smaller scale sharing as well, perhaps starting among residents, but not necessarily limited to that?
