Phase 5.1

Populations and Programs

I would like my project to serve low income families to create affordable housing in this area. We found in our research that the surrounding neighborhoods around Hyde Park are generally of a lower income and have higher unemployment rates. This housing would give the lower income families an opportunity to live in Hyde Park which has traditionally less crime rates and would be safer for the families coming in. Also, most properties in Hyde Park are one bedroom apartments, and families with no children. The properties in Hyde Park are also traditionally much more expensive than in surrounding areas. This would create a more affordable option for families with children as well, and since this is more an area for young professionals hopefully this would bring in more families into the area.

Since our area is in an area of Hyde Park along 53rd where there might be more crime than other areas in Hyde Park, but I would like to create a shared space for those families in this living community. I am thinking of using Via 57 as my precedent. I like the idea of having a central courtyard that is elevated, creating a more private shared space that is not as accessible to the public, since our site is facing a commercial strip. This would create a great space for the families inside this community to interact with each other while also creating a safe outdoor space. Something interesting about this area in Hyde Park is also how many parks are within walking area of our site. I would love to bring this importance for parks that is evident in Hyde Park into this building.

Underneath this shared space, I would like to create a shared space for the community. I noticed that there are not many craft oriented businesses in the area, that would give opportunities for those that are living there to learn some sort of trade that will be useful in their lives and potentially help them make money. I have worked in a sewing studio for 5 years and I feel like this is a very useful skill and craft that would be a perfect addition to this neighborhood. Not only would people of all ages come together to create, but also they could gather and sell their work for more resources for the studio and also make money for themselves as well, all while learning an art that has becoming more lost as time goes on that is a very practical skill.

 Sharing

  • 3 Phase 1 sharing / personal space examples
    • Creating a courtyard that is elevated will make activities above visible as well as the people using the courtyard looking down at the commercial stores, like in my diagram of the MTCC shared space
    • Harsha’s CTA diagram showed how the circulation paths throughout the day in a shared space impacts the people that are using it
    • My office diagram: pushing the boudoirs of comfort through sharing spaces with different levels of transparency/less walls and open spaces
  • 3 Phase 2 precedents with identified sharing “concepts”
    • Via 57 raised courtyard
    • Marco Polo connected terraces that push the boudoirs of privacy
    • City Hyde park: an example the is already in Hyde Park close to our site that has shared spaces would be interesting to study which sharing operations the architects thought would be most fitting to this area and demographic
  • 3 Phase 3 models (use your own or swap in ones from your peers)
    • Emily’s cracker model would be an interesting precedent for this project because of how the separate stairs merged not only to create a space above, but also one that you could interact with while underneath
    • My model of the acrylic sheets: I would like to incorporate the ideas of semi enclosed spaces and enclosed spaces to push borders of privacy and imply certain spaces to gather, where the different spaces subtly merge into one.
    • Ruth’s eggshell model also would be an interesting space to study, because the organic shapes in the way that they stack on top of each other create semi enclose spaces that still are able to view other spaces created

  1. Rebeca,
I really like the idea of a sewing space as one of your shared programs. Also the idea of creating a raised courtyard for the residents: I’m not sure if you’re intending the courtyard as your second shared program (or if it would yet count as a specific program). Something to think about and clarify on Friday.
I also like Via 57 as a precedent- can you make a 11×17 of it? Full confession: I’m even more interested in knowing how your building will be not like Via 57 or other newer buildings in Hyde Park. There’s also a brand new building on 53rd just on the other side of the Metra tracks (at Cornell I think). Could you figure out the size and mix of apartments in these buildings to compare to what you want to do? What else about these buildings is a positive or negative example? City Hyde Park too?
I appreciate all the added info you included about the neighborhood- over time I think you can fine tune but it’s a good start to bolster your proposal.
For your sharing precedents I’d like to see the images of at least your favorites on Friday. Not sure if you don’t have photos or just couldn’t get them to post because we were low on storage space, but for the 11x17s please get/use them AND put in your own diagrams. I’m interested to see if you can show a precedent for carving away an upper level open space (Michael Maltzan?)
Take your MTCC, Ruth’s eggshells (I really like both of those, but use whatever strikes you) and try to use the language from those examples- be it a diagramming or a spatial language- to draw how your spaces could relate. I’d love to see a sewing center, shared community space, low-income apartments that work like Ruth’s eggshells and then another model (and another…)
