Envelope Mock-Up

Trae Horne – Section Perspective

I’m not really sure how corners of buildings work and witch directions I-joists / joists should go. I do not really understand how the party wall works or how sky lights work as well.

I also Have a 90″ door height and my largest window is 72″ tall and 76″ wide.

  1. Hi Trae,
To fully answer all your questions I think we’ll need a plan and a printout of your unique drawing to draw over, but I think it’s a good choice of drawings and a good start. A couple starting points:
    – because your spans are small you might be better off with dimensional lumber and can mix in rectangular engineered members where needed for cantilevers.
    – where you have cantilevers they will drive the framing direction- you want the longest backspan and shortest cantilever span you can.
    – a green roof weighs 15-20 pounds per sq. ft. so you might start checking sizing for the roof members at a higher loading: 15 psd dead + 50 psf live is on the Boise Cascade charts and almost gets you there.
    – look at the structure post for the frost depth info- it will affect your footings some
    – your below grade walls will need to be concrete (or c.m.u.) I’m assuming 8″ concrete will make the most sense but we can discuss.
    – you can definitely do a skylight much as you’ve shown.
    – below the skylight you’ll only need one foundation- maybe a design question first about what happens there then solve the structural detail?
