Phase 2: Nathaniel Staniak

PROJECT TEAM: Aveiya Gordon, Malhar Kate, Damla Sucuka

The Shield Shelter was constructed to protect those who choose to enter it from the stresses of the outside world, including those pertaining to physical disturbances and gun violence. In the neighborhood of Bronzeville, there is a lack of public facilities like pavilions, and lots of talk and stigma about the dangers of violent crime. This can make for a stressful experience when entering the area, and our shelter is designed to remove individuals from the mental anxiety about the stigma of the neighborhood.

Our Pavilion is designed to look like a pair of hands, cusped about the exterior of the structure. It is meant to symbolize care and comfort from the harshness of the outside. The pavilion is constructed so that the boards are a smooth, woven surface in the interior, but jagged and irregular on the exterior.

The parts and pieces drawing is designed to show how the pavilion is assembled, but also how the pieces relate to each other in order to show the contrast between the interior and exterior. The left side of the drawing illustrates the arches, and the right shows the braces in between them in elevation. Each set has the next ghosted in underneath, so that the drawing shows the change in scale, position, and angles of each of the sets as they progress. The center shows the assembled pavilion in perspective, with the braces and arches screwed into place. This is to show the detail of how the intersections should look, as well as how they are connected to each other.
