Elevators, Stairs, and Ramps
Below video tutorials for how to layout the elements of vertical circulation. For your project you are required to have:
- One enclosed egress stair serving all main floor levels and the roof of your building.
- One elevator serving all main floor levels of your building.
- All public (shared) programs must also be served another means of vertical circulation. This could take the form of an open stair or ramp, a series of connecting stairs…
Just as an FYI: Building Code requires two means of egress (not elevators) from just about all floor levels except in small residential structures, which means two enclosed stairs (open stairs can only be used in limited circumstances). But for the purpose of this studio we’ve decided that one enclosed “fire stair” is sufficient for the residences and the public programs can use an open stair for their second egress. You can use a second enclosed stair to serve the public programs but should definitely consider creating a more open and architectural means of vertical circulation for the public.

Your vertical circulation might take a variety of forms, but in some way you should be able to design and draft a block of the elevator and stair to put into your plans. (REMINDER: yours will be different than the example.)
