PHASE 1: DOCUMANTATION

I chose to explore a revolving door because of its transitional use from one space to another, while also being a shared space within itself. The user moves from one space, to a shared space to the next space and I found that interesting to explore.
Locker rooms have always been a space that somewhat has a culture of its own with certain unspoken rules. So I chose to explore the levels of comfort that people may or may not experience while using a locker room.
The radio studio stood out to me because essentially all of is completely transparent to the public. You can see and observe everything that goes on in it while passing by. However you cannot hear what’s going on in there unless you have the radio on tuned to the station. I saw that aspect of complete transparent-ness with the exception of its intention of sound production t be extremely compelling to explore.

Images fro Elsewhere

I found the perceived complete lack of privacy to the user to be quite interesting compared to the contrast of actual complete
privacy from the public to be worth talking about. The user feels as if anyone can look into the restroom and observe what they could be doing while from the public, there are only just mirrors and has no way of actually seeing into the space.
A Library is already a space that’s somewhat implied to be semi private experience although it’s a completely public area. Nobody likes being bothered while at the library. So I decided to use the intention of these little cubbie holes to convey that people wish to be left alone in this completely public space.
A homeless shelter a a semi public space with privacy implemented into it. By its nature, a bed or place to sleep is extremely private as is your most vulnerable place. So I found it compelling to explore how exactly these private spaces could be interrupted or affected by the nature of being a semi public space to its users. The level of comfort the user has could entirely depend of where they are within the space.

Compelling examples

I liked how the relationship between public and private, and the intention of the space is explored in SSV. The space as a whole is public to the residents, but has, multiple uses to it depending on who is there at what time of the day.
Being one space, it is constantly interrupted by the trees and has implied spaces and paths that encourage the user to take depending on if they may be coming or going, or intent to use the bike rack. The small gesture of planting trees breaks up this entire space into smaller implied spaces.
The quad is made up of multiple, private houses, however it is all circulated around a central public space that is free to anyone, including those not living in one of the houses. The relationship between private house and public field somewhat bridges the gap between each house to create a community or neighborhood effect.
