Q-tip
For my first design I chose q-tips as my found object. I explored many different concepts for developing this as a space that shelters and condenses a space as you move deeper into the structure. My final concept explored this idea of condensing the space and creating different levels of shelter as you move throughout. The further you travel into it the lower the head height becomes and creates this feeling of shelter and protection and requires you to either bend down or completely sit down.
The sharing verb blend is used to showcase how the structure becomes one and flows down all the way to the ground plane. The geometry is what reflects this word and how these separate members, when combined, are one complete structure.
LEGO
For my second design I used LEGO as my found object. With this design there we several different ways to explore the geometry of these objects and wanted to create a way to showcase space by not just stacking the bricks in an ordinary way. The idea of the bricks using each other as support while creating these varying and offset levels of different heights of space showcased this design in full capacity. The incorporation of different lengths of bricks allowed for cantilevered spaces to overlook the entirety of the design. Depending on where you are at in the space there are different head heights which transform the similar spaces to have different feelings.
The sharing word I used for this design was overlap. The “overlap” of the bricks allowed for these different spaces and head heights within, to be created. The overhang not only created ceiling space, but also were used as the platforms to stand on for the level above the ceiling.
Another sharing word used was intersect. Similar to overlap, however this showcases more of how the spaces were created by this. The overlap creates intersections of the bricks which goes hand in hand when creating the spaces and cantilevered elements.
Golf Ball
For this design golf balls were unusual to work with being that they are not seen as an item that creates space. The first way I explored this was by stacking the balls and attempting to create space by myself. After realizing this was not as useful, I increased the amount of balls and this showed more development of space. Finally, increasing the amount of balls once more, I simulated the balls being a bucket and then removed balls from the randomized stack to create a design that reflected the natural state of how golf balls sit in a box. This design allowed for unique spaces to be created within and different levels of space. Certain areas require a person to crouch, sit, or allow for them to stand completely up. This idea allowed for the space to be transformed and seen in different ways.
The sharing word used for this deign was bundle. The premise of this design was brought out from the golf balls being put in a box and using their natural form of bundling together to put emphasis on how they were assembled in the end. The idea that they are all connected into one another while also creating gaps create light wells and protection above.
