Habitat 67

Habitat 67

Habitat 67 is an example of intersect because every façade is intersecting with at least one other façade. Not only do the units themselves intersect, but so do the balconies, further solidifying this concept of intersect. The intersection of the units is what makes the building work and what gives the overall form and program of the building

Marco Polo Tower

Marco Polo

The Marco Polo Tower is an example of bind because the open floor plan of the terrace allows all the units to bind. People can pass from one unit’s part of the terrace to another. This binds the people and floor plans of the different units on the floor.

Star Apartments

Star Apartments

Start Apartments is an example of merge because the building consists of public, semi-public, and private spaces which merge as someone goes from one section to another. It’s apparent by the aesthetic of the façade how the layers merge with one another. The units have a very modular design, which allows the various programs of the units to merge as well.

Torres Blancas

torres blancas

Torres Blancas is an example of bundle because of the mere design of the structure. It looks like a bundle of vertical tubes,  making the very form of the building a bundle. The building is supposed to resemble a tree, with the different layers resembling rings of trees.

Kitagata

Kitagata

Kitagata is an example of overlap because the units overlap with one another in various ways. The units within the structure can be different shapes such as an “L” or a “Z”. These different shapes and sizes of units are only possible because the units overlap each other.

The Valley

The Valley

The Valley is an example of mix because it’s a mix between nature and Amsterdam’s metropolis. The building itself has a very organic form and aesthetic, which helps to mix these two aspects of Amsterdam together. The very nature of the building fits in with the context without disrupting the city.

Amsterdam Orphanage

amsterdam orphanage 0

This is an example of mix because it’s a mix between nature and Amsterdam’s metropolis. The building itself has a very organic form and aesthetic, which helps to mix these two aspects of Amsterdam together. The very nature of the building fits in with the context without disrupting the city.

MLK 1101

MLK 1101

MLK 1101 is an example of gather because the design helps people gather in a central location and even see people gathering in the central courtyard. The units open up into the courtyard, so as soon as the step outside you can see the public area and the people who are already gathering. This central gathering area not only gives people a place to gather, but also persuades people to come gather since it’s in the line of vision of all the apartments.

Walden 7

Walden 7

Walden 7 is an example of laminate because the various apartments are stacked on one another and shifted to make it very apartment that the separate units are being laminated. The form of the building makes the argument much more compelling, many apartments buildings deal with stacking of units, but by shifting the volumes slightly, it forces the viewer to see the lamination of the building. There are also many different layers, which makes it even more apparent.

Mirador

Mirador

Mirador is an example of weave because the circulation paths throughout the building weave. The vertical bundle of units and the rectangular void present in the structure causes this weave like circulation pathway. This is especially apparent in the concept model which shows the various arbitrary pathways and how they interact with the apartments.
